Diet Comparison Study
There was a recent study released in the New England Journal of Medicine that compared a variety of diets: Atkins/Low Carb, Mediterranean, and Low Fat.
On Good Morning America this morning, Dr. Timothy Johnson (their medical correspondent) talked about the study. While most of the “plans” really seem to be aimed at a more commercial application (rigid, specific programs), Dr. Johnson recommends a comprehensive approach. He dubbed it his “Johnson Five Point Program” which has those same components that we hear over and over, but we seem to not hear:
- Cut down on saturated and trans fats… dairy, marbled meats, meats, etc.
- Cut down on refined carbs… sugars, desserts, etc.
- Count calories!
- Emphasis plant foods
- Engage in regular exercise
Sounds easy, right? It always sounds easy. But, why isn’t it? I guess if it were easy, everyone would be fit and healthy.
